ExpressCard is a low cost, fully-functional and highly efficient peripheral interface for use with computers. Originally called Nucleo Connect, it is designed by IDS Technologies Ltd., now part of Wildfire Technologies, in order to allow data to be transferred rapidly between computers. The new name was chosen to illustrate what the card is all about: it is a type of chip that acts as a connector between electronic components, without having to use wires or sockets. Conventional chip-based computer networking equipment is not directly applicable to this technology, as it does not use the same sort of bus as Ethernet or USB.

ExpressCard, originally called Nucleo Connect, is an innovative interface for connecting peripheral devices to the host computer, typically a laptop computer. The express card's standard definition specifies the structure of slots constructed into the host computer and to plug in the peripherals. In this definition there is no provision for power management. A power management unit, however, can be installed into the host system for managing power sources, but this feature is generally unnecessary, as the power management capabilities of the processor are adequate for most applications.

There are a few advantages of using an ExpressCard compared to other types of card readers and slots: there is less strain on the CPU and nerves on the motherboard when cards are inserted into these slots; the transfer rate is faster than any other interface; there is a better compatibility with existing systems; it is possible to add more than one ExpressCard to a single PC without any degradation of performance. However, it is also possible to over-write or corrupt an ExpressCard slot with an incompatible driver, so it is sensible to check and see if you have any compatible drivers before installing any new hardware devices. In addition, some older operating systems do not recognise and work with ExpressCard devices, and some of these systems will work incorrectly with a laptop that has an ExpressCard slot but does not have an accompanying USB device.

Some of the benefits of an ExpressCard compared to other forms of card are that it can be inserted into different PCI Express (PCIe) slots, can transfer a variety of data formats including PDF, TIFF, BMP, GIF and many others, and there is a universal serial bus (USB) connection. There is no need for an active adapter in order to attach the card to the system, so there is no need for an active pci express driver and therefore no requirement to install an operating system if you are planning to use the card in a non-active computer. The USB connection makes it very convenient to transfer data from a laptop to a desktop computer.

ExpressCard can be used in conjunction with other computer peripherals such as printers, scanners, keyboards and other devices. It is the ideal choice for connecting any peripheral device that operates under the name of PCM unless the device is implemented as an RS-232 serial express card itself. When using this card to interface with other computers, a PCM printer is required to have a special driver installed since it does not have its own driver. Similarly, only PCM printers with RS 232 serial express card slots can be connected to ExpressCard. A PCM printer will only work properly when it is running with an express card enabled.

ExpressCards began shipping in May, 2021 with several models of the card based on the Extended-ATD spec. These cards are available in different sizes, with the most common size being fourteen-pin. Four types of expansion slots are available: RSVP, UHS-UDH and STD. All models except the UHS-UDH have a PCI Express slot for Ethernet cards. UHS-UDH models are only available with ten-pin Ethernet cards. In early months, all UHS-UDH models were sold without card slots except for the ten-pin Ethernet model.

The card buses used with Express Cards can be either USB 2.0 or PCMCIA. USB 2.0 is the newer standard, and the preferred bus by many because the technology allows for data to be sent and received at a higher bandwidth than is possible with other bus technologies. PCMCIA, which stands for Personal Computer Model Interface, has proven to be a very useful standard. Since PCMCIA has a standardized architecture, manufacturers are able to create compatible adapters for use with older PC models that utilize the same bus.

The connection between an Express Card and a PC is very simple and can be accomplished with a standard USB cable. The PCM card can also be configured using PCM BIOS and can communicate with an existing USB or FireWire port. One of the advantages of using a PCM card as opposed to a separate peripheral is that there are fewer parts to connect, leading to less clutter. In addition, the PCM BIOS will allow you to turn off power consumption during non-pressurized times. Because of these benefits, the majority of Express Cards that have been produced now come with a PCMCIA slot. It is important to ensure that your particular Express Card has a PCMCIA slot in order to use it with an existing peripheral device.
